Why Get This Book

This one is for the serious student: the pastor preparing a sermon series, or the reader who wants the scholarly detail. Ralph Klein reads 1 Samuel as part of Israel's larger history from the settlement in the land to the exile, and works through the stories of Samuel, Saul and David in that setting. This edition adds an updated introduction covering recent studies of history, text and literary approaches. Honest note: it's an academic commentary with technical discussion, so it isn't for casual or devotional reading. Next step: read 1 Samuel 3:10 and pray, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."
